Newport 300 Celebrations in 2022

Newport 300 celebrations in 2022

It’s full steam ahead for the hard working team organising Newport’s 300th birthday celebrations. Those celebrations will now take place in 2022, two years later than originally planned.

“We were devastated when our events could not go ahead in 2020, but actually, this has offered us a golden opportunity to plan an even more exciting and ambitious programme of events” was how committee chairman Cormac Kelly put it.

Starting on 2nd April 2022 with the unveiling of a beautiful artisan crafted stone plaque which will be unveiled in Canon Killeen Park, the celebrations will continue with events every month right through to December.

These events will include a highly anticipated outdoor concert at the quay featuring Sharon Shannon, Mundy, Mary Coughlan and Frances Black, planned for the June Bank Holiday Weekend. Rehearsals will also be starting shortly for ‘A Journey Through Time’, an original piece of street theatre marking significant events in Newport’s colourful history, which will be performed in May.

Newport 300 is not just about organized events. The theme of the celebrations is ‘Looking Back … Moving Forward’ which means that there is also a big focus on longer term projects that people will enjoy for years and decades to come. An example of this is the beautiful street signs that were erected around Newport in collaboration with Tidy Towns in 2020, and the upcoming publication of ‘Newport – the first Two Hundred Years’ a stunning commemorative hardback book which will be available to purchase at the end of 2021.

But that is just the tip of the iceberg. From easter egg hunts and musical performances to family harvest festivals and photo exhibitions – there will truly be something for everyone.

This is just a flavour of what we can look forward to in Newport in 2022 . For all the latest information and regular updates, check out our website ( and our facebook page (
